Job Description

Title: Answers on Aging Specialist

AoA Specialist Functions:

  1. Provide unbiased assistance in researching, determining, and enrolling in the most appropriate Medicare plan that meets the client’s needs:
    • Acquire and maintain SHIP counsellor accreditation
    • Attend scheduled SHIP meetings
    • Use Medicare.gov and SHIP Medigap Plan Finder tools to model each client’s Medicare options, including plan benefits and costs
    • Use insurance websites to research provider (doctors/pharmacy) participation in Medicare plans to ensure that the client is able to maintain relationships with their providers
    • Clarify benefits offered by the insurance plans by researching insurance websites or calling/emailing insurance companies
  2. Assist clients in applying for ABE benefits (e.g., SNAP, Medicaid, cash assistance). Assistance may be by referring the client to the appropriate office location or by working with clients to input the information into the appropriate ABE online forms
  3. Assist clients in applying discounted license plate stickers or free transit cards via the Illinois Department on Aging Benefit Access Application program
    • Entry of Initial Application
    • Coordinating the uploading of any required documentation (e.g., tax forms, driver’s license copies) when requested by the BAA team
    • Printing and distribution of the BAA Approval documents and providing detailed instructions so that clients may complete the process of acquiring the stickers and/or bus passes
  4. Assist clients to maintain their independence by researching and referring questions to appropriate agencies/organizations that provide assistance
  5. Accurately record client requests in volunteer management system
  6. Maintain records of all client contacts in hardcopy forms and by inputting client contact information into appropriate third-party data stores (e.g., Aging IS, STARS)
  7. Perform outreach activities by scheduling and meeting with clients in third-party locations, such as libraries and senior centers
  8. Participate in FIA fundraising and community visibility activities to increase brand awareness and generate revenue
  9. Serve on organizational committees, at the direction of the Executive Director
  10. Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director
